Freeze Time!

We had freezing temperatures for the past 2 days and of course this brings extra business to any plumbing companies with broken water lines and frozen Pressure Vacuum breaker valves for irrigation lines. We usually get calls for quotes and the home owner will thank us and call around to get other quotes. Most of the time they will call us back and set up a schedule for a repair. Yesterday I had a nice young lady who, after she wrote a check for the work I completed, was kind enough to tell me the competitors were more than twice what I was charging. Of course I already knew this, but I can’t help but get a little disappointed that companies would get so greedy and charge so much money for something so simple. It comes down to ethics. I could never take advantage of a home owner in situation like that. There are companies that purposely go out to all the supply houses including Home Depot and Lowes and completely purchase all of a certain item when freezing temperatures occur just to keep home owners and competitors from buying them. This way, those companies can charge outrageous prices for those items and really sock it to the consumers. I would rather go bankrupt and out of business than follow this kind of business model. To me, its more important to take care of the consumers and home owners, charge a fair price for the work, do a good job and in the end those home owners will call you back, so instead of making 400% on a job, I will make 100% on that one job and get continued service down the road with that home owner.
